Play-Along Lesson – ‘Chatter’ Vamp

This is a really fun vamp from the drum solo section of a Mike Stern song called ‘Chatter’. I’ve included two versions, one with a click and one without. The version with no click is the one you’ll want to work on the most because of the 6-beat gap where it’s just you – it’s a great tool for practicing your sense of time whether you’re just grooving or soloing. I also posted below two videos from YouTube featuring a live version of the whole song and a video of Weckl blowing over the solo section. Have fun!

  • Louie,
When you open up the video, what are you playing around :16-:20 seconds in. It sounds so cool. Could you explain what you are doing right there?

    Thank,
    Brian

    • Hi Brian…yes, of course. It’s just triplets…two hands and one foot note…but rather than RLF RLF its starting on the left hand…so it’s LFR LFR over and over. So think of the left hand as falling on the beat (with your hi-hat foot notes). These patterns are explained in the ‘Hand and Foot Combinations’ lessons in the foundation course. I’ll also add this to the list of lessons answering member questions. There are a few combinations for those triplet patterns but the one you are citing is my favourite!

      • Louie…thanks for getting back to me. I would love to see a lesson of you doing those combos and explaining how to use them the way you did. Thank you!!
