Lick of the Month – July 2016

Often referred to as the ‘sweep’, this lick was first brought to my attention by Dennis Chambers. You’ll see him do it in many of his solos (have a look on YouTube) and it’s a fun lick to learn and practice. It might take a while to get the motion together between the floor tom and snare – take it slow to begin with. Even if you don’t use this lick a lot in your vocabulary, it’s a good example of an alternating phrase – something that moves L to R and then R to L – and these are important to get comfortable with to improve your control.
