Hand Exercise – 3-Stroke Ruff Routines

The best way to enhance the execution and sound of your grooves/chops is to work on rudiments. It’s very important to have command over your rudiments at a variety of tempos just on the snare. Rudiments have various elements built-in to them like accents (played as rim-shots), ghost notes, right/left hand lead and these are the things you need for smooth ghost notes & backbeats in your grooves and good dynamic contract in your vocabulary around the kit.

These 3-stroke ruff routines are challenging but rewarding. Get comfortable with the 3-stroke ruff on it’s own first and then look the the longer and shorter exercises, in that order.
