Practicing with a Metronome – Part One

This is the first in a series of lessons dedicated to metronome practice. In this introductory lesson, I talk a little about what I learned about metronome practice from Chris Coleman and also about an article I read featuring Wayne Krantz and little nugget of information that has stayed with me and is a valuable thing to think about whenever playing with a click.

Then I introduce a very simple but challenging exercise that is guaranteed to highlight your ‘time’ weaknesses. It’s an exercise we’ve all done before but one that is excellent for improving your ability to change from one note rate to another smoothly and really try to concentrate hard on the click (as discussed in the Wayne Krantz example).

Practice this at a range of tempos and make sure to start off with single strokes and then try it with double strokes and always have your left foot playing quarter notes!
