How To Practice – Pad Practice
Hello, Login to start. Not a member? Join Today!
In this lesson I talk about how to practice away from the drums on pads, but more specifically on surfaces with no rebound (towel, pillow, etc). The benefits of doing this are huge and although this has been talked about by many drummers, and students are aware of it, more often than not they don’t actually do it.
As an experiment, try implementing this into your routine everyday for one week. Do 15-30 min per day of HARD practice on a towel or pillow-like surface. Push yourself. Remember the benefits only start when your hand(s) feel exhausted; THAT’S when you know you’re making progress.

Hi Louie.
Thank s, great lesson. I tried skype lesson a few days ago and we talked about this exercise. The way you teach is really great, it makes sense and help a lot…

Excellent lesson Louie.
I will be trying out your suggestions today, pushing past the burn stage, it makes sense training past the point of necessity. Training harder than what a person is going to need on stage.
I used to practice on a pillow many years ago, but for some reason or other, I stopped doing it.
I have just purchased a Reflexx pad and I’m waiting for delivery of it.
In your opinion, would it advantageous to have a moongel pad also which you mention in the earlier practice pad videos, or would the reflexx pad be enough?
Perhaps I should go with the towel which you did recommend, it would be less expensive in the long run.
Thanks.
Hi Gary! Thanks! I am guilty of not doing this enough, too. It really is a huge time saver and will give the best results.
I must say the 14″ Moongel pad is great. It’s harder workout than the Reflexx pad but it can only do one thing, whereas the Reflexx can do both. Ultimately, a towel is just as good as the Moongel pad, in terms of results. It just depends on what you prefer playing.
Hope that helps. Let me know how you get on and what you think of the Reflexx pad.
Thanks!
Louie
