I was learning a track sent to me by Australian keys player Phil Turcio (check his records out which feature Weckl and Will Kennedy) and was drilling this solo section over and over. All in 4/4! My goal was to get comfortable with the riff, catch some of the hits and gradually build through each round of the vamp.

Thanks, Vitali! Those licks at 0:28 are not the weckl 9’s – it’s using the double pedal (though only for two notes so not essential at all) and the sticking is RLRLkkRLRRLL. The first four notes are snare/rack 1/floor tom/floor tom…then two kicks…then paradiddle-diddle on snare. That’s the main phrase but it will often go into something else. Anyhow, I’ll do a video on this lick because I play it a lot and it’s a good one!
