Building Your Own Vocabulary – Trading 16th’s

Let’s put some of the things discussed in the vocabulary course into action. Using ONLY single strokes and ONLY 16th notes, let’s trade back and forth in 4-bar segments.

– After the count-in we play a groove together for 4 bars.

– Then I will solo for 4 bars while you keep time.

– Then you solo for 4 bars while I keep time.

We take four solo segments each before the tempo changes.

As explained in the introduction, hearing someone else solo while you keep time can be a great way to learn and pick-up ideas. You can copy some of the things I play or you can play off them (like a question and answer thing).

No matter what your level it’s important to keep it simple and focus on your TIME and SOUND. Keep everything nice and even using simple ideas and focus on a nice clean sound!

NOTE – Please let me know if you like this trading format! Let me know what you’d like more or less of, if you want it to be longer, shorter, different tempos etc. Feedback welcome so the material can be the most beneficial for your practicing.

  • I never really appreciated straight 16ths solo and the variations that are possible. I’d classify this lesson in the category of “creative inspiration and timing”. I like the back and forth- and another great exercise that had the additional benefit helping my internal clock. Lou says in another video- (paraphrase) “you can do a whole gig in nothing but 16ths” and I never thought about it but I think it is true. To really feel comfortable with straight nothing but 16ths and always be able to find the one is a worthy goal indeed. I’m still working on it. Thanks Lou- another great lesson.

    • Hi Dave – great to hear you’re enjoying that course. And yes, could EASILY survive forever with just singles if delivered with great time and sound…and lots of dynamics! Keep me posted on how you get on!
