hi louis,
i always wondering about why training wrist stroke so hard rather than moeller?
i get one reflexx pad, and play all the exercises, just dont get it
A “Whip” could make them sound good, why pull every note out from the wrist?
i used to play ahead MARCHING PAD, because of the high response and staccato sound makes me aware much of the dynamic, and most important of the rate accuracy.
the boom sound of the reflexx pad i cant recognise what i just play, especially playing inversion of fast doubles, thats important for me, and the lack of rebound affect the momentum to play continuous stroke effectively.I believe there are something confuse me that i dont know what it about
thank you louis
Hi Brock! A lot of this is covered in the hand technique course so definitely check that out. Buddy Rich, Dennis Chambers, Billy Cobham all used pillows to practice and strengthen their wrists to be able to pull a big sound out of any surface when necessary. You can hear the power and speed in their playing. I am utilising bounce as well but these wrist exercises I talk about a lot are a way of training – it’s not necessarily how I play all the time. Look at the way athletes train – they go far beyond the basic mechanics of their sports and they do all sorts of weird exercises (lots of them with added resistance also) so that things feel effortless when performance time comes.
I tend not to hit the edge of the pad unless I want to for a reason – I just advocate practicing on pads with no rebound most of the time so that you can build great control. If one only uses bounce one has to rely on the surfaces (some of which have no rebound) and things can, and often do, sound sloppy.
Check out the hand technique course for a detailed rundown of all of this stuff!
Thanks,
Louie
yes i did, i keep practicing with those wrist exercise on the reflex pad these day. Cause jojo mayer’s DVD influence me a lots about hand technique, free stroke, control rebound and moeller are the core of my drumming concept, mainly focusing control of the stick, and though that only metal drummer would train muscle(wrist, finger) specifically. LOL
thankyou, louie
It’s good to learn all the techniques that you think will help you – but in my opinion it’s important to start with a strong base with the wrists!
