Listening Lists – Fusion Favourites
Hello, Login to start. Not a member? Join Today!
A new series for PBD. It’s well overdue but here is the first part of a series playing clips and talking in detail about recordings and my recommendations for listening material.
I thought I’d start off with some of my favourite recordings from my youth – records that came to mind instantly as they left such an impression on me.
Some GREAT recordings and drumming performances here.

Lots of musician’s I’m familiar with, but few albums I’ve heard before. Couldn’t be more happy to find this list!!! Thank you for sharing it. Here are some of my favorite “obscure” jazz/fusion albums that all drummers should hear.
Star – Peter Erskine
Tony Gray – Chasing Shadows – Chris Dave, Martin Valihora, Ronald Bruner Jr.
John Abercrombie – The Third Quartet – Joey Baron
Lyle Workman – Harmonic Crusader – Vinnie C, Simon Phillips, Gary Novak
It has been SEVERAL years since I’ve listened to any jazz/fusion, so I’m long overdue to dive back into this genre. I’ve forgotten the names of a bunch of my old favorites, very disturbing!!!!
Yes! Great suggestions; love those records. The Tony Grey record has some amazing drumming.
Hi, awesome awesome awesome posted video. What helped me developed were the records I listened to. I got much more mileage out of buying recommended records than learning licks. Really loved the video. Very pleased to hear that you will continue this series. Modern Drummer always used to ask drummers being interviewed about their favourite records but now it seems they stopped doing that which is a terrible shame. Well done!
Glad you enjoyed it, Mario! Will definitely be continuing the series!
Thanks!
Louie
Awesome video! Glad to get recommendations from you! I’ll definitely check these records!
I’ve made a Spotify playlist with what’s available there.

Awesome! That’s a great idea, thanks!
