I made the switch to Yamaha! This is a long, in-depth discussion on why I switched and how these drums stack up against everything else I’ve played!

  • Hey Louie, great video! Always something to learn with you. I wanted to mention your experience with the sitting position behind drums. I solved the problem for myself by building my own hybrid bass drum pedal, it’s like the right half that horrible Offset Pedal but using an expensive! lefty Pearl Demon pedal. I reconfigured this pedal to only use the right foot pedal. The bass drum now sits directly in front of the snare and the recorded playback of the kick and snare is centered in the overheads. First floor tom is much closer to the second rack and so on…and, well, you know about my 0.8 mm shell, 24″ x 24″ bass drum I made. Cheers!

    • Yes…I tried that kind of thing a couple of times but never liked the feel of the main pedal not directly connected to hitting the drum!

  • Hey Louie, congratulations on the new gear! It really does suits your style more! I don’t know if you are familiar with the fact that, on Yams, the deeper you mount the tom arm in the drum the less sustain it has, and the more you get it out the sustain gets bigger. That definitely helps with the bass drum mount and the overall sound. As far as the AHM goes it’s a fantastic kit. I really love it paired with clear heads because of the roar that you get and the focused sound! I was wondering if you are going to try new drumhead brands with the new kits. Cheers!

    • Hi John – yes, lots of little things like that can affect the tom sustain. I might try UV1’s again as I generally prefer the feel of single-ply heads, and I may try clear G2’s one day. Not that it’s the most important thing but clear heads are a pain when filming because of the reflections from the lights above the kit.
