Play-Along Lesson – “Level Up”

This is really fun, high energy track to play along with. The tempo is quite brisk but I’ve gone over in detail the various grooves and patterns I chose to play in the different sections. If you work on those slowly first, you’ll feel more confident with the track itself.

On the other hand, a good learning exercise can be to just dive right in and play along with the song immediately and try to find your own way through it and see how you do. Perhaps record yourself and gradually refine the parts you play. That’s a really great thing to do for your musicianship.

I’ve included the song minus drums plus two loops of the tricky drum solo section – one at normal speed and one a little slower.

Have fun!

  • Louie,
What is the Legacy cymbal on your far right? It’s like half a ozone crash.

    • Hi Brian – It’s a HHX Legacy O-Zone Ride but I use it as a crash. I find a lot of the Legacy rides are more crash-friendly than ride-friendly. I have a 20″ Legacy ride that I also use a crash and a 21″ Legacy ride with rivets that works great as a crash ride. Perhaps if I had them make a 22″ Legacy ride it would be less wash and therefore better for using as a ride. Generally much prefer 22″ and bigger for ride cymbals.

The good thing about Sabian is that they don’t vary too much. Every model I have ever picked out for backline or to acquire as a new cymbal for myself, has sounded exactly how I expected. So if you pick out a 20″ O-Zone ride, I’m sure it will sound pretty much the same as mine.
