Lick of the Month – September 2017

A very simple but effective lick this month. It’s just six notes, 16th note triplets, but with an accent on the second note. If you get the dynamics nice and smooth and speed it up a bit, the ‘1’ gets disguised a little and it’s a great sounding fill.

    • Hi Billy, thanks for the question! Well, just from practicing simple rudiments. Having a strong hold over singles, doubles, paradiddles is a good place to start. Being able to play those as 16th notes at a variety of tempos, on a pad to begin with, is essential. Then you can take those same rudiments and play them around the drums. It takes a long time but eventually as you gradually speed up, you’ll get better as playing those kinds of patterns smoothly around the drums.

Have a look at the ‘rudiments around the kit’ category on the site as well as the hand technique course to make sure your hands are working correctly!

      Thanks!

    • …start very slow with this pattern. It’s a very simple sticking – FRLRLR – so just start very slow and build it up in speed over time. It may take weeks (and that’s fine) so just do a little bit every time you sit down to practice.
