This is a very tasty groove I heard Vinnie play on Herbie Hancock’s ‘Actual Proof’. Vinnie starts the song off with this groove and then plays a few very cool variations. I’ve included an MP3 of the song in question!

Hello, new on your site, former professional drummer, (Drumtech studies London 1990, Agostini Paris) Drum in French military music, I noticed that you wash the index finger and the middle finger left hand to hit, more or less the strong shots, is this technique new, I have not worked or seen this often even at vinnie, this technique works how? Is it new? what exercises do you have to work on this (quickly, i am not a beginner) knowing that mine is a mixed “moeller” (after a 15-year stop, i would like to improve my technique since it has evolved) both for the hands and for the rest! Thanks
Hi Jean-Claude! Welcome to the site!
Most traditional grip players do this. It’s totally unnatural to play a loud rimshot and keep the index finger and thumb closed. Nothing new about it…just natural. I would recommend watching the full Hand Technique course in the school as I discuss everything to do with hand technique in great detail (11 lessons!).
