Practice Room – Jan 2019

Some noodling while trying some new clear ambassadors on these drums for the first time.

I really like the clarity and clear attack I get in comparison to the coated version. I have tried emperors (2-ply) and while they are good for lower/fatter tunings, I’ve never really liked the feel of a 2-ply head under my stick, particularly being a traditional grip player. Single-ply heads really give the truest and most open sound and are easiest to play. The coated ambassadors just give a little more warmth, or take away some attack, depending on how you look at it.

What heads do you use?

Drums:
10×7, 12×8, 13×9, 14×14, 16×16, 22×16 bass, 14×5 Dennis Chambers snare

Cymbals:
14″ Byzanze Traditional Medium bottom over Extra Dry Medium bottom
20″ Byzance Dark Crash
22″ Byzance Jazz Medium Ride
21″ Byzance Nuance Ride
20″ Byzance Traditional Medium Crash

Sticks:
Vic Firth Buddy Rich

Heads:
Remo clear ambassadors all around (clear P3 on kick)

Microphones:
Earthworks
DM20’s on toms and snare
SLR25’s for overheads

  • Love that little lick at 4:18! Might be a good lick of the month?

    • Hey Cody. You mean the lick swiping down from the crash to the tom? Yes, that could be a good one for Lick of the Month! Will do that for sure!

      Thanks,

      Louie

  • Yes, that’s the one. Seems like it could have many variations. Sweeping from cymbals and toms etc.

    Thanks in advance!!

The Dennis Chambers snare is an absolute gem. I got mine in the late 90’s early 2000’s. Back when The MMX Master Customs were top of line. Before the reference series. I believe the DC1465 has changed some. Sound right?
