Gear Video – Setup 2021

Here’s a full and very detailed discussion on my current setup. I touch on the hi-hat position and the pros & cons, how I mount the hats, the tom positions, cymbal angles, pedals and more.

If you have any questions on the setup or any of the gear just comment below or post a question in the Q&A section!

  • Looks and sounds so great Louie. It’s great to see you always exploring different setups.

Just wondered if you find the hat positioning makes a cross-stick difficult at all?

    • Thanks, Dave. Glad you liked the vid. I knew there was going to be something I forgot!!! Cross-stick – well, I do have to move the stick a bit further towards me and be concentrating so as not to hit the hats, but overall it’s fine…just an adjustment that’s all.

  • You make a really good point in the video about those adjustments being tiny compared to the sort of compromise we all make every day with right hand over left. I do miss some of your left hand hi hat work in fills though!! Perhaps an X hat half-open on the left somewhere?!?

  • Hey Louie! First of all GREAT sound! Every time you change something your sound is getting better!! About the setup, why not use a secondary hi-hat with remote on a traditional setup if your only issue appears to be the crossover?

    • Thanks! Always working on the sound…never satisfied!

Regarding the hi-hat setup – the crossing wasn’t the only issue. I was incredibly bored of playing a traditional setup and bored of hearing/seeing everyone else play it, too. Plus, it only works for me if the hats on the right are nice and close – if they were shoved over to the right somewhere, they’d be too far away and it wouldn’t be as comfortable. I could use a traditional hi-hat in addition to having the remote hats where they are now, (I actually used that idea for a while about 15 years ago) but it’s not necessary for most things and I don’t want to rely on having to hat TWO hi-hat stands.

      Thanks!
