Traditional Grip – Part 1

As requested by one of the members, here is a guide to traditional grip. It can be a good idea to practice a little bit of traditional grip even if you’re a matched player, which I suspect most people are. If you are a trad grip player then this video is going to be particularly useful. A lot of drummers don’t utilise the full range of motion in the left hand so I’ve included a couple of exercises to fast track the development of the wrist strokes. Comment under the lesson if you have any questions!

    • Hi Angelo – this is something that just takes time to rectify. It’s a similar thing when learning finger control..the stick is often all over the place & it’s hard to get it to go up & down in a straight line…but that just gets ironed out over time. It’s just a case of applying just the right amount of pressure between the thumb & first finger…the more repetition the better and things will get ironed out. The other option, which I often recommend, is to use matched grip. The time it takes to get traditional grip together to the point where one has enough power and consistency is so much more than it would be for matched…and for what gain? Just something to think about…
