Practice Clip (March 2018)

Here’s a little footage from a recent practice session (March 2018). I’ve been messing with different setups lately – I enjoy this 3-rack tom setup but it’s a little tough to negotiate with traditional grip but I do enjoy the melodic options with the 10, 12, 13 racks. I remember Dennis Chambers saying he always wondered why most drummers only used 10 & 12 – he said it sounds so small. I kind of agree sometimes…the 10″ as the main rack does sound a little small. Using just 12 & 13 is great but I miss having the 10 as an option.

  • Hi Louie, I’ve watched this clip about a dozen times so far on YouTube. This is the style of playing I aspire to. Can you comment about the main groove at the beginning (and throughout) the clip? Thanks!

    • Hi Lou – Thanks! Some of the members here don’t always see what I post on social media or YouTube so I decided to put it up here too. The groove at the beginning is something I can do a lesson on for sure. It’s basically a half-time groove but I’m thinking mostly about the ride cymbal and making it ‘jazz-like’ in terms of making it based around one 8th note & two 16th’s (straight version of spang-a-lang jazz ride) and then throwing in variations & hitting the backbeat on beat 3. I’ll make sure I do a lesson on this kind of groove and transcribe what I’m playing.

      Thanks!

  • Really amazing playing Louie. I also really like the groove and the triplet runs around the toms at the end of the fills. Inspirational.
