Hi Louie, I also have the Pearl Maple Gum drums(and I love them). I have a few snares which I use but I dont have a Maple Gum snare. Do you feel that its an important difference in the overall drum sound or more minimal. ( I play mostly Rock). Thx Louie

    • Hi James!

I love the maple gum snare in particular. It’s the best wood snare I have had from Pearl. I don’t think it’s essential to have to match the kit but it’s a great snare if you want a wood option. If you play rock I’d go for the 6.5 version!

      Thanks!

Thanks Louie, What would you recommend regarding a Metal shell snare? As all my snares are wood currently. Thx , James

    • I always love brass and aluminum. Steel is good but can be very ‘flat’ sounding…not in a bad way, just not much character. Copper is really nice but not much of that around in snares these days. Brass is ringy and open; aluminum is dry and punchy. Hoops make a difference too; die-cast will be more controlled and cutting, while triple flange will be more open and soft. What kit do you have? Is there a brand you prefer?

Hey Louie, I play the Pearl Maple Gum. Of course I have heard great things about the Ludwig Black Beauty, I am a Pearl guy for the most part but its not etched in stone. I am sure Pearl has an equivalent? Thx as always Louie, James

        • The Pearl Sensitone snares are great drums and amazing value for money. The brass and aluminum are definitely worth getting. I like the 5″ brass free floating snare too but that’s a little more contained than the brass Sensitone. Other great brass drums – the Keith Carlock snare by Gretsch is a fantastic drum….really awesome. Works at any tuning. Also the Gergo Borlai Gretsch snare…it’s a shallow depth but it’s deceiving; works great at low tunings…very big and fat.
