Lick of the Month – March 2024

A great example of how taking just singles strokes and being inventive with orchestration and dynamics can create an interesting & exciting phrase.

Like always, amazing stuff! I wonder if you might consider demonstrating in just a small portion of a video, how you would play this lick and some others in matched grip. I believe you mentioned somewhere in a previous video that you occasionally play with matched grip. In this particularly video, I noticed how freely the stick is moving in your left traditional grip and it works great with the position of the rack tom, (you might noticed a bit of envy hereā€¦) so for us matched grip players out there, it would be a great help to see how you would do it with matched. Thanks!

    • Hmmm…I’m not sure because I almost never play matched. In any case, this (like everything else) is harder with traditional because I have to lean down slightly to hit the 10″ properly; with matched I wouldn’t have to do that. Yes, the grip is more open so the stick is freer, and you can create as slightly delayed effect because of that…but much easier to get power and attitude with matched. I’ll give it a go and report back!
