Every drummer needs to hear this…

In literally every lesson I’ve ever taught, the same topic/questions comes up. ‘How do I ‘flow’ better on the drums?’, ‘How do I get more comfortable playing fills?’, ‘How do I get rid of the hesitancy when I try to play around the drums?’, ‘When I have to play any kind of solo my mind goes blank…how do I fix that?’.

All these basically boil down to – how do you get comfortable expressing yourself? Forget genres; forget groove vs chops; forget how big or small your drum set is; forget whether you see yourself as a busy or simple drummer – ALL drummers need to be able to express themselves. If you can’t ‘sing’ rhythms in your head (in 16th notes, triplets, 32nd’s, etc) then you won’t be able to play them on the drums.

In this discussion/lesson I go into detail about vocabulary, why we need it, and how to develop it. This was originally posted to YouTube but I thought it would be valuable to post here also.
